Credential Requirements |
DEM
Direct Entry Midwife
|
Formerly
called lay midwife, any midwife trained directly into midwifery
without becoming a nurse first. In Oregon midwifery is considered
legal and licensing is voluntary. Use of medications is illegal.
Practices outside of the hospital. |
CPM
Certified Professional Midwife |
National
credential requiring comprehensive written and practical exam, and
documentation of 40 births. May be a graduate of a MEAC accredited
program or complete a Portfolio Evaluation Process. Practices
outside of the hospital. |
LM or LDM
Licensed Direct Entry Midwife |
Varies per
State, in Oregon must be a CPM, attend 50 births and can
use specific medications. Practices outside of the hospital.

CNM
Certified Nurse Midwife |
Must be an
RN, and graduated from an ACM accredited nurse-midwifery program.
In Oregon, must have a Masters degree. Can get hospital privileges
and prescribe most medications. |
CM
Certified Midwife ACNM- |
A graduate
of an ACM accredited program who did not become a nurse first. Not
recognized in all states. Can get hospital privileges and
prescribe most medications. |
ND
Naturopathic Doctor |
A graduate of an accredited
Naturopathic Medical school. A family physician with a focus on
natural medicine. In Oregon a special obstetric certificate is
required to deliver babies. |
